Choppers, Hogs -------- WHY?

Why is the front wheel mounted as far forward as possible, resulting in obvious weakness. Ride one of those things off a pavement/sidewalk and the thing will break in half. Riders feet have to be raised to the footrests and rider leans back. Handlebars are best three feet above so rider can hang like a Barbery ape. I know this is all a tradition going back to the drugs movie but the hogs only seem to do 40 Kays/hour and yet they are supposed to cruise the wide country trying to find the rider's self. Why not do it on a Triumph 2.3 litre in comfort?

I am not trying to upset the faithful, i just want to know WHY?

Extended forks were initially done to increase highway stability by increasing wheelbase; putting more time between the bumping of the wheels over a road imperfections makes straight-line handling easier. Of course, like 22" wheels on cars, folks got carried away.

Forward foot controls accommodate long legs; some people like or need them.

Ape-hanger handlebars, like extended forks, took the idea of higher [more comfortable to some] %26 pushed it to an extreme.

Motorcycles are a very emotional possesion, so much of what is done is more of an artistic type of thinking than practical. Personally I think if it makes the rider happy w/o endangering anyone else, fine, enjoy.
